A Balanced First Stage ensures the air supply remains constant regardless of cylinder pressure (the intermediate pressure is always 9.5 bar above ambient.) A balanced first stage has a ?balancing chamber? which ensures that as tank pressure drops the pressure of air to the second stage is maintained. This allows the regulator to breathe easy even at low tank pressures.
