North MoleMaxdepth: 20 metres Experience: Advanced Located on the outside of Fremantle Harbour, North Mole is an excellent dive site with a great variety of life. The dive access is via a rather steep ramp, and the safest entry is using a rope to hold onto whilst 'abseiling' down the ramp! The boulders of North Mole house many crayfish, and out on the sand one can find Port Jackson sharks and rays. Some distance from the mole is the wreck thought to be the Gareenup. The Gareenup was a 70 ton towing lighter, which was sunk there in 1923. The hull stands about 4m out of the sandy bottom, and a diver can enter the narrow corridor through the corroded bulkhead and swim to the engine room. The wreck houses numerous fish and is overgrown by ascidians and sponges - very pretty on a night dive. To find the wreck, swim at the surface or along the bottom at a bearing of 350° for about 150m. The site is best accessed when the swell is low and the wind not northerlies. Author : John Smith |
