Papua New Guinea 2002
Papua New Guinea 2002Papua New Guinea is unquestionabley home to some of the worlds best diving, offering great walls, reefs and wrecks. Luke Endacott and Brad Gordon experienced what most could only ever dream of during a trip out of the world famous Walindi Plantation in New Brittain. I mean, come on - diving with Killer Whales in 30 deg water!!
From Brisbaine International Airport we flew directly into Port Moresby in PNG, then a quick flight from there up to the island of New Brittain and onto the Walindi Plantation Resort. This dive resort located in Kimbe Bay is surrounded by some pretty thick jungle giving you the feeling you really are isolated. The Walindi accomodation comprises of thatch bungalows along the ocean front. It is now very hard to determine where the bungalow finishes and the jungle begins with all the growth coming out of the thatched roofs. Very unique!
The diving was amongst the best I had ever encountered with beautiful corals and just a uncomprehedable amount of marine life including the ever present lurking dog tooth tuna's. The highlight of this trip was snorkelling with 3 Killer Whales right in front of the Walindi Resort. If you ever want to feel alive then this is the thing for you!!
We spotted the Killer Whales a few hundred meters away and slowly moved the boat towards them. They did not seem worried by the boat so we put on our mask and snorkel and slipped in the water with them. I swam along side the orcas for about 5 minutes when they then dived off into the deep never to be seen again. On the long swim back to the boat looking down into the gloom below I could not get the vision from 'Wolves of the Sea' out of my mind. Oh what a feeling!
